By the age of 17 I was an All-American, Youth Club National Champion, and had multiple professional trials under my belt. Looking back, I see a career shaped as much by setbacks as by talent.
Two ACL reconstructions — one on each knee — and a long list of soft-tissue injuries forced me to slow down at moments my game should have been accelerating. Like a lot of high-level young players, I also made choices in high school and college that I later regretted. Peer pressure and the desire to fit in cost me moments and momentum I can't get back.
But every one of those experiences taught me something. Working with a sports psychologist during my peak playing years opened my eyes to the part of the game most coaches never address — mindset, emotional control, and nervous system regulation. Coming back from surgery taught me about recovery, mobility, and how to train the body for the long haul. The choices I wish I could redo gave me a clear picture of what I tell young players today.
